Choosing the Right Tires and Wheels for Your Cars
Time: 2011-04-08

Buying tires and wheels for your car or any other vehicle depends on many factors other than just aesthetic appeal. Wise car owners need to consider various things such as cost, performance and style of the wheels they are buying. Tires and wheels are expensive purchases and run the risk of becoming damaged or even stolen. Hence, the buyers need to weigh heavily the costs and risks before going out and purchasing them. Let’s have a look at the different factors that a buyer needs to consider when buying tires.

Which type of tire you want?
When you are in market to buy tires for your car, you will have to make decision between two choices. You can either opt to buy alloy wheels or steel wheels. Cost wise, alloy wheels are much more expensive than steel ones. However, when it comes to performance, they are better compared to steel wheels. Not only alloy wheels are stronger but also lighter. On the other hand, steel wheels are less expensive, however they also lack in the quality.

What size will be an appropriate one?
You also need to decide beforehand what size of the tire you want to buy. Most car wheel manufacturers manufacture wheels that are 15 inch wheels in diameter. However, you can go for larger tires. It depends on your choice as some people, who are really into cars, may go as big as 20-22 inches. But, 16 and 17 inch tires will give you a marginally larger wheel, but will not be too flashy if this is a concern.

Larger wheels have benefits apart from the style and street credibility. Perhaps the most important advantage of larger wheels is that they are better able to provide you with a better traction. The only negative side of these types of wheels is that they can be damaged more easily if driven on poor quality roads. Hence, if you are going to drive your vehicle on rough terrain or streets with a number of potholes, you are most likely to damage larger wheels much more easily.

You will obviously have to buy tires after you have bought your wheels. The tires that you will buy will depend on the size of your wheels and also the weather conditions of the area that you live in. For instance, if you are from a city that has all four seasons and that has very rough winters and rainy seasons, then you will have to buy a tire that is more conducive to that and will offer you with better safety. Usually, this will include tires that have more traction.

Buying tire is not enough; you also have to take a proper care of them. Ideally, you should rotate the tires just about every 4000 miles to make sure that they wear down evenly.

Another thing to consider is your budget. It will be important factor that will determine what type of wheels and tires you purchase. Since there is always a risk to damage your wheels, be sure that you weigh this risk before going out and blowing a lot of money on wheels and tires.
