Fuel filters are a main component in your car especially if you have a fuel injection vehicle. Having clean fuel that does not clog up your fuel lines is a vital signal of your cars overall health. A dirty fuel filter will cause things such as poor fuel economy and worse of all poor engine performance.

 

Click to enlarge The first thing you need to do is to turn your car off and allow the car to adequately cool. Next find your fuel filter location. Generally it is underneath your car near the gas tank. Depending on your make and model year car I would search Google to determine the best place to look, sometimes the filter is under the hood of your car also.

 

Click to enlarge Once you have located the fuel filter unscrew both ends slowly, often a little gas will leak don't worry about that it is totally normal. As you can see from the diagram I am unscrewing the connections using two wrenches, one to hold the bolt in place an the other to unscrew the gas line. It is important to take off the mounting bracket after you unscrew the fuel lines.

 

Click to enlarge From here put the fuel filter bracket around the new filter and then check the fuel filter ring on the end of the fuel line connector. Make sure the ring is not damaged as this might cause leaks. Slowly insert the fuel line into the fuel filter and screw the fuel line connections back. From here replace secure the fuel filter bracket by screwing it into place.

 

Once that is done, start your car and check for leaks.
